#TIFF59 final day: "Pearl"; "We the Animals" and closing party.
November 12, 2018

Hello everyone once again! I finished my time at #TIFF59 with "Pearl" by Elsa Amiel, "We the animals" by Jeremiah Zagar and the closing party at Warehouse C.   Up first was the film "Pearl" by Elsa Amiel. I really enjoyed this film, it was a very intriguing film about the world of body building and how women are treated in these kind of competitions. It was interesting to hear from the director how much difficulty she had doing...

#TIFF59 day seven: "The Harvesters" by Etienne Kallos.
November 10, 2018

Welcome back! #TIFF59 continues with the psychological drama "The Harvesters", directed by Etienne Kallos.  This movie is an in-depth portrayal of the lives of two Afrikaans boys coming of age in a post-apartheid South Africa. This movie...just did not do it for me. I was bored by most of the film. The plot felt disjointed and the pacing uneven. The acting felt off, espceially the two boys playing the main charcters of the movie...

#TIFF59 day six: "Her Job" by Nikos Labôt.
November 9, 2018

Hello everyone once again! #TIFF59 continues with Nikos Labôt's debut feature film "Her Job" and it was fantastic. It is a very realistic portrayal of living in Greece under the economical crisis, and from what audience members had to say in the Q+A, it really resonated with Greeks and those who have been in circumstances similar to the ones of the main character. Most Greeks know someone like her or  even experienced situations...

#TIFF59 day four: "Mapplethorpe" and "Smuggling Hendrix"
November 7, 2018

Another great day at #TIFF59, this time I continued my time at the festival with "Mapplethorpe" by Ondi Timoner and the highly anticipated "Smuggling Hendrix" by Marios Pipierides.     Up first was the biographical film "Mapplethorpe", with Matt Smith (Doctor Who) in the main role. I really enjoyed this film, Matt Smith was fantastic (as always), even though it took me a while to get used to hear Doctor Who talk in a perfect...

#TIFF59 day three: "The Swerve"
November 6, 2018

Hello again! Today, I continued my time at #tiff59 with a premiere of the drama film "The Swerve" by Dean Kapsalis, and it was pretty good! It was a very interesting and well-done modern spin on greek mythology. Luckily, Dean Kapsalis refrained from simply retelling greek tragedies and instead used borrowed elements, characters and plot structures from different greek tales.  So, it luckily feels less like a retelling of a greek...

#TIFF59 Day two: "The Rainbow Experiment" and "Chained for Life"
November 5, 2018

Hello once again! It is day two of #TIFF59 and today, I saw "The Rainbow Experiment" by Christina Kallas and "Chained for Life" by Aaron Schimberg.   The first film I saw today was "The Rainbow Experiment" by Christina Kallas and I was pleasantly surprised! The film is a nice character study of 36 different people, most of them high school students at a public school in New York City and how they deal with a tragic...

#TIFF59 day one: "Sunset" and meeting László Nemes
November 2, 2018

Greetings everyone! The 59th International Film Festival in Thessaloniki has begun and the first film I  saw was "Sunset", the second film of Oscar-winning film director László Nemes ("Son of Saul"). This was a special screening with a Q+A and meet and greet with the director himself after the film. "Son of Saul" is an amazing (and seriously gut-punching) film which I enjoyed very much, and I was very excited about László...
